As both a professional dancer and ballet teacher, Jessica is uniquely qualified to work with dancers and their movement goals.
Jessica strongly believes that to make dancing look easy and bring out your natural artistry, coordination through alignment and breath be the predominant goal for every dancer. She believes that ballet and dance are for everyone and encourages her students to believe in their potential as artistic movers. In addition to her GYROTONIC® certifications, she is also an American Ballet Theatre Certified Teacher. She has 15 years of teaching experience and attends seminars and other courses each year to continue to provide her students with the highest level of training. Over the years her students have been accepted into various college programs including but not limited to Lines BFA Program, Arts Umbrella, Marymount, NYU, UCLA, Columbia, Chapman, & Juilliard. Many of her students have gone on to have successful careers in LA, NYC, & around the world.

With first hand experience training in the Cecchetti, Vaganova, and French styles of ballet, as well as experience with contemporary and jazz, Jessica is able to work with students of any technical background. This experience allows your private sessions to be built around you and your school's expectations to help you meet you goals. Another unique feature of Jessica's lessons is that homework is giving at the end of each session. This helps you to feel less overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of details involved in improving your technique. And gives you short term, attainable goals that allow you to see your progress and keep you motivated.

FAQs

What is cross-training for dancers?

Cross-training for dancers is supplemental movement training that strengthens, mobilizes, and protects a dancer's body outside of the studio. At ShadowOfaDancer, we use the GYROTONIC and GYROKINESIS methods to improve alignment, breath, coordination, and range of motion so dancers can move more freely and reduce their risk of injury. It is designed to support - not replace - your current dance training.

Why is cross-training important for dancers?

Cross-training is important for dancers because repetitive technical work can create imbalances, tightness, and overuse injuries. By training the body in complementary ways, dancers build the functional strength and mobility that ballet and contemporary technique demand, while correcting the alignment habits that lead to pain. The result is cleaner technique, better stamina, and a longer, healthier dance career.

Will cross-training replace my dance classes?

Cross-training will not replace your dance classes - it acts as additional support to your current training. We make alignment and breath the predominant goal for every dancer, reinforcing the work you do in your regular classes. Think of it as the conditioning and mobility foundation that makes everything you do in the studio stronger and safer.

Is GYROTONIC good for hypermobility?

GYROTONIC is good for hypermobility because it teaches you how to stabilize your joints through decompression instead of compression which allows you to stabilize your joints without strain. This translates into being able to better handle load in other activites like dance, sports, or weight training without joint pain.

Does Gyrotonic builld muscle?

GYROTONIC builds long lean muscle and improves fascial body strength through fluid circular motions and specialized equipment. It is a functional mobility training method that specifically trains you to use your full range of motion safely. When combined with traditional weight training or functional strength training it can greatly improve your results as your overall fundamental movement patterns will be more efficient.

What dance styles and levels do you work with?

We work with dancers of all levels and technical backgrounds, because ballet and dance are for everyone. Our instructor has trained students in Cecchetti, Vaganova, French, contemporary, and jazz styles, and tailors each session to your school's expectations and your personal goals. Whether you are pre-professional or dancing for joy, the work is built around you.

Who teaches cross-training at ShadowOfaDancer?

Cross-training at ShadowOfaDancer is taught by Jessica, a retired professional dancer, ballet teacher, and American Ballet Theatre Certified Teacher with over 15 years of teaching experience. She holds GYROTONIC certifications and continually pursues professional development, so dancers receive informed, technique-aware instruction.

How does cross-training help prevent dance injuries?

Cross-training helps prevent dance injuries by improving mobility, strength, and body awareness in the areas dancers rely on most. By restoring balanced range of motion and reinforcing proper alignment and breath, we reduce the strain that causes common dance injuries. Each session also ends with attainable homework so progress continues between visits and stays motivating.
