What is GYROKINESIS®?

What is GYROKINESIS®? Is a question I get asked whenever I tell people what I do. So I thought I'd try to explain in a bit more detail.

The official definition is as follows.
"The Gyrokinesis Method is the sister method to the Gyrotonic method that addresses the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, and creating functional strength through rhythmic, flowing movement sequences. It is an original and unique method which coordinates movement, breath and mental focus. This method is practiced on stools and either Gyrokinesis mats or yoga mats. Which makes it ideal for group fitness classes or to be experienced in a workshop/master class."

To try and say this in simpler terms, this method is great for creating better awareness of the body and building up the functional motions that happen in everyday life.

From the Seated Alternating Leg Series in the Gyrokinesis method. This series increases range of motion through the back of the leg, hips, and back. While also teaching you how to move through spinal flexion safely.

We use spinal flexion whenever we do things like tie our shoes or pick something up off the floor. Being able to do this safely helps minimize the risk of injury to our spine. It also allows those with issues like osteoporosis or certain disk injuries to still be able to function in a more normal way.
It can also be used to build coordination and range of motion to improve technique in various sports or other moving arts.

From the Hip Knee Mobilization Series in the Gyrokinesis method. As the name suggests, this series focuses on increasing hip & knee mobility. It also works on coordinating moving from one position to the next while maintaining proper connections throughout the body.

Hurdlers are an excellent example of what it means to require range of motion while at the same time being coordinated enough to move in and out of that range quickly.

Dancers are another obvious example. They need to have very extreme ranges of motion while at the same time being able to control every part of their bodies at all times.
In short the Gyrokinesis method is a full body movement method and can provide a number of benefits to many different people when practiced regularly. At ShadowOfaDancer we host a number of group classes each week, which are opening to anyone. You can sign up for our group classes by clicking the book now button below.

I hope this helps answer some of your questions about the Gyrokinesis method! If you have any other questions feel free to email me at jess@shadowofadancer.com
